Karlovo
Karlovo is a town in The Valley of the Roses, set between the Sredna Gora mountain and the Stara Planina mountain range.
Held every year in June is the famous rose festival. Based in Kazanluk and Karlovo, singing, dancing and carnivals are held dedicated to the Rose. Oil taken from the rose is used in oils and perfumes. Such quality is the oil produced, a large portion of the final product is exported to many parts of Europe, including England and France.
The flora and fauna of Karlovo valley and the surrounding mountains are remarkable for their diversity. There are excellent conditions for the growth of oil bearing rose, lavender, spearmint, vines and various fruit trees such as chestnut, figs and Karlovo plum trees.
In Karlovo you will find the museum dedicated to Vassil Levsky, Bulgarias national hero. The house of Vassil Levsky, which he was brought up in, was left unlived in for many years, but in 1933, with the help of the citizens of Karlovo and Vassil Levsky’s relatives, the house was restored to it’s original form. The house can be visited to view preserved documents, pieces of art and valuable objects. The exposition hall of the museum shows materials connected with the birthplace and the family of Vassil Levsky, his life and his role in the struggles for liberation of the Bulgarian people in the 19th century. Art by generations of Bulgarian artists are displayed and also copies of historical and fiction works about Vassil Levsky.
From the back of the 20th of July square is Vodopad Street. Follow the river up through the beautiful wooded walkway to the Suchurum waterfall. The walk is about 1 km.
Banks, shops, DIY, Cafes, clubs, restaurants, museums, churches, historical sites, hospital and health clinics, Karlovo has everything.
Even though the town is being developed, it still has the traditional old charm, cobbled streets, with many churches and houses preserved to maintain Karlovo’s architectural and historic past.
Karlovo is a great starting point for visiting all Bulgaria. Centrally located, in any direction can be visited the coast and ski resorts and only 147km to the capital Sofia.
Karlovo has a main railway station and regular bus service.
